Temple Bar, Dublin

Just to clarify things--Temple Bar is a neighborhood, not a bar (they are called pubs in Ireland anyways--ergo The Temple Bar Pub with its iconic murals and red paint).  It was literally acroos the street from where we had awesome cottage pie at a little pub (The Shack) that was big on atmosphere, but small on elbow room in the bathroom. This brings new meaning to the term water closet. I admire a proprietor that knows how to put every square meter of space into productivity. Let's just say they are not paying the rent with 'the facilities'.

Cataract Canyon, Colorado River, UT

In 2005, Carnegie Ward Young Men went on a High Adventure rafting trip down Cataract Canyon of the Colorado River.  It's in protected National Parks, so all solid waste needs to be carried out. Hence the blue ammo can with a yellow "G" that was our toilet for 5 days.  The "G" stands for Groover because back in the old days it didn't have an attachable toilet seat. Using it left a tell-tale groove on your posterior. We were glad to have the seat.

High Adventure has a tendency to be thrown around a lot in Young Men programs in the church.  This was the real deal: 90 miles of river, no way out, no communication.  Awesome.

Bread and Butter, Henderson

The best breakfast bakery in town. Period. Robyn worked here this summer, so we got the inside scoop on the menu. Chris has a wacky sense of humor. Check out toilet paper!

Hayes, UK

Quaint English pub near hotel. I tried chicken & mushroom pie, and shepherd's pie with a pint of Diet Coke.  Check out the butter . . . almost!

Urinal plumbing interesting.

Chicago, O Hare

Pretty fancy for an airport.  A motion detector over the back of the toilet runs a motor which automatically gives you a shiny new seat cover to sit with confidence on.

River Itchen, Hampshire, UK

On September 5, 2012 I fished one of the finest trout streams in all of England, the River Itchen in Hampshire. It is a beautiful spring-fed chaulkstream: the stuff legends are made of.  It has large numbers of gorgeous brown trout and grayling. We used classic stalking techniques in which we spotted fish and then cast to them with dry flies and nymphs.  I don't think I'll ever be able to return to London without coming back again.  I've got to get back here.  This was the second time I've used David Martin as a guide; he is extremely good.

To make things official I took a urinal picture of the fancy toilets on the train from London Waterloo to Basingstoke.

Puerto Rico

In 2006, the family joined me in Perto Rico for a research meeting that I attended. It was our first trip to the Caribbean. With the exception of the fish count, it was a resounding success with smiles all around . . . even at this urinal.
